Can I use public transport with my dog?

If you want to use a bus, train, tram or plane with your dog, you'll find that public transport in Australia isn't geared towards pets. However, there are still some great opportunities to take your dog on the road, as long as you plan ahead.

Dogs on trains, buses and trams in Melbourne and Sydney.

Transport New South Wales states that pets (aside from assistance dogs or police/security dogs) are not permitted on train or platforms, but can be permitted on a bus or light rail at the discretion of the staff if the pet is contained in a box or crate. In Metropolitan Melbourne, pet dogs are permitted on trains (and only in a crate if on buses and trams) as long as they are on a lead and muzzled. Regional Victorian trains also allows small animals to board as long as they are kept in a box or crate.

As you can see, the rules vary greatly between locations, so always check online first! And remember - if your pooch is allowed onboard, be sure they are well-trained and that you clean up after them :-)

Can you take dogs on trains?

Wondering if dogs are allowed on trains? Research pays off, so before jumping on board a train be sure to check your local public transport rules.

As mentioned above, this depends on where you are travelling in Australia as the rules can really vary between cities. Always check with your rail carrier before purchasing your ticket as to whether your dog will be permitted on a train, and if they are required to be muzzled or in a crate. Special arrangements can be made for guide dogs and service dogs.

Domestic plane trips

It is possible to take your dog on a domestic plane. All pets must travel in special travel crates in the baggage compartment. Different terms and conditions apply for each airline, so always check thoroughly in advance.  Advise the airline that you'll be bringing your dog with you when booking your flight and check carefully which vaccinations and certificates your dog may require in order to travel.

There are reputable companies in Australia (such as JetPets) who can help you with the process of flying with a pet - we definitely advise getting in touch with them!

International Flights

Flying internationally with a pet from Australia is usually undertaken for a specific reason, such as home relocation, and isn't something to be taken lightly. It's a costly process to re-enter Australia with a pet, and they must be quarantined for a period of time, so be sure to read the fine print. As with domestic travel, you will need to get in touch with the airline well in advance and pay an additional cost for your pet to join you. We strongly advise using a service such as Jetpets to help guide you through this process.

Always check the airline website for the specific rules regarding pet travel before setting off on your journey. The information in this article is intended as a guide only, and the exact costs and regulations may vary. Special arrangements can usually be made for guide and service dogs.

Of course, it's great that your dog can travel with you, but the welfare of your pet should always come first. Does your dog find travelling stressful? In this case, do the right thing by them by arranging a friendly dog sitter to stay in your home or board your dog.
