My mother loved animals, and my father loved outdoor adventures. My sisters and I inherited those loves. We grew up near the beach in Melbourne, and that's where we took our dog twice a day. 

Our long-term pets were a dog (Labrador/border collie), two cats, lots of chickens, and occasionally rabbits and other small animals. We rescued baby birds, and kittens illegally dumped in the coastal reserve. My sisters grew up to be vets. In my teenage years I often looked after, and walked, neighbours' dogs. 

I like small dogs, but big dogs are my favourites. I live near the beach in Sandy Bay, Hobart. There is a dog walking beach in the mornings near my home. Of course there's another well-known dog beach at Kingston. Dogs on leads are permitted in the bush reserve uphill from my home.
