We are Helen and Klaartje. I, Helen, am 44 years old and am currently doing a PhD in childhood cancer. With my project, I am trying to develop novel nanotechnology-based therapeutics for childhood brain cancer. My partner is Klaartje, 38 years old and a senior cancer researcher at the same research institute.
Klaartje and I live in Sydney for over 4 years now and we have been permanent residents for over a year. I know everyone says this but we absolutely adore animals. Klaartje is even a vegetarian for over 24 years ! I have had cats for a large part of my adult life, mainly rescue cats that had a rough start to life and needed a lot of patience and love. Klaartje grew up with both house rabbits and smaller (Jack Russel) and medium sized (Airdale Terrier) dogs.
I guess you are wondering why we enjoy pet sitting. The main reason is because we do not have pets ourselves. We feel that it would not be fair to have pets ourselves because we both are required to travel quite a lot, visiting other scientists within Australia and around the world. Also, our jobs are based on grant funding and because of this we do not have fixed contracts which means we need to be flexible about where we live for certain parts of our lives (national or international). Because of this, we started a few years ago doing pet and home sitting jobs. The pet sitting jobs give us the opportunity to spend time with so many different lovely, little characters. We have had great experiences with this, and it is something that gives us great pleasure and relaxation. Pets are the best therapy!
In terms of the services we provide, we are happy to open our home for home boarding of rabbits, cats and dogs. We live in a detached 3-bedroom home with a large fenced balcony, surrounded by an unfenced large garden. As you can see from our pictures, the fence would not be high enough to accommodate large dogs. Of course, we are always very happy for anyone to inspect our house prior to boarding. We are also available to mind your pets at your home (overnights or on visits) and to walk your dogs.
We live an active life style and enjoy long walks. We live close to the river in Ryde where you can just walk for hours so for dog owners: don’t worry, the dogs will get plenty of exercise. Because both my partner and I are at a stage in our careers where we don’t spend all of our time in the laboratory anymore, but also at our computers writing up our findings, our work hours and schedules are very flexible with at least 2 days a week working from home.
If you are interested in us minding your pets, please don’t hesitate to contact us to ask us any questions you would like so you can get to know us better. We understand completely that this is a big decision and a big deal and that you want to know who will be taking care of your pets. We promise you that we will take good care of them and love them loads.
Helen and Klaartje
Helen took great care of our Casper while we were away. He liked her so much our only concern was he might run away with her! Will definitely reach out to Helen when we next go away.
Helen was fantastic. I would highly recommend her to anyone and will definitely use her again. She and Klaartje went above and beyond (waiting a ridiculously long time for my very naughty cat to come when he was called!!!) and their communication throughout was fantastic. They were incredibly helpful sorting the booking out (it was my first time I'd used Pawshake) and came to meet me before I booked so I could show them the house and what they needed to do which I really appreciated. Absolutely would recommend. Thank you so much guys for everything! Alice
